But first, your daily headlines:

Monroe County Council Strategizes Jail Transition Team

On March 12th, the Monroe County Council discussed a strategy to launch a jail transition team. Chief Deputy Sheriff Phil Parker explained why the sheriff’s department wants to establish the jail transition team.

Jail Transition Director Cory Grass said he toured a facility in Franklin County, Ohio. Grass said he wanted to implement a transition team with a similar focus.

Parker continued to walk through an overview of the jail transition.

Council Member Pete Iversen said he sympathizes with the sense of urgency for the initiative.

Council Member Geoff McKim suggested that they could use local income tax revenue earmarked for mental health services in the jail as a funding mechanism for the project.

Council Member Jennifer Crossley said she agrees with McKim to use funding from local income tax rather than using American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Sheriff Reuben Marté urged the council for their continued support on the jail transition.

The Monroe County Council will meet next on March 26th.

Up next, we have IN Nature – a segment highlighting the flora and fauna of South Central Indiana. Tune in Friday at 5 p.m. to hear IN Nature on Eco Report, our environmental affairs program on WFHB. We turn now to that segment.

Every three years the best harp players in the world gather in Bloomington for the USA International Harp Competition. Of course the IU Jacobs School of Music is involved, but the competition itself is an independent organization relying heavily on volunteers. Deb Pekin is looking for host families willing to share their home with visiting performers, but there’s lots of other stuff you can do to help out too. Deb Pekin is our guest this week on a new episode of Activate!, coming your way right now on the WFHB Local News.
