Demonstrators Gather Outside Indiana Statehouse to Protest Indiana’s Proposed Abortion Ban

Demonstrators gathered outside the Indiana Statehouse on Monday to protest Indiana’s proposed abortion ban.

Indiana is among the first states to consider a ban on abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 case Roe v. Wade. Abortion bans are expected to happen in about half of U.S. states.

WFHB News attended the protest outside the Statehouse and spoke with several demonstrators to capture how they feel regarding the state’s proposed ban on abortion.

Katherine, a protester from Floyd County in Southern Indiana, walked through her reasoning for attending the protest.

Indiana Senate Republicans introduced a bill that would ban abortion ahead of a special session that took place at 1 p.m. Senate Bill 1 would ban all abortions in the state except in cases of rape, incest or where the mother’s life is in danger.

Katherine gave her reaction to the senate bill.

She said that due to the Republican supermajority in Indiana, she expects the bill to pass with little opposition in the Indiana General Assembly.

Katherine said that abortion rights are in jeopardy in the state. She described how the recently introduced legislation made her feel.

Diana and Jasmine came to the protest to let their legislators know that they do not support their rights being taken away from them.

Diana and Jasmine explained how they felt when they learned that Roe v. Wade had been overturned.

Diana said that although she is glad that Indiana has included exceptions for rape, incest, or if the mothers life is in danger, she is not hopeful they will protect the rights of all women.

Next, we spoke with Diamond, who said she came to the protest to meet like minded people and to speak out against a bill that would impact her personally as a woman.

WFHB News spoke with two protestors, K.K. and Aiyla, both from Indianapolis. Here’s what they had to say.

Indiana Senate Republicans said that they hope to take a final vote on Senate Bill 1 by Friday. Then, if passed, the bill would go to the House for consideration.

If passed in the House, the abortion ban would go into effect on September 1st.
