Play

This is the WFHB Local News for Wednesday, July 14th, 2021.

Later in the program, WFHB Correspondent Robert Robinson speaks with Julie Garrett, Public Affairs Specialist at the Small Business Administration, about a loan available for Monroe County renters, homeowners, and business owners seeking financial relief due to the flooding last month. That’s coming up in today’s feature reports.

Also coming up in the next half hour, we have Better Beware – your weekly consumer-watchdog segment hosted and produced by Richard Fish.

But first, your local news brief:

This past Saturday, the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma has been put on disciplinary probation after the IDS investigation into hazing this past winter – which included endangering others, sexual harassment, lewd and indecent conduct and physical abuse. Social event restrictions will be put in place until October 2021.

On Sunday, a man pulled a knife and threatened a patron after an altercation around 7 pm near campus. Shortly after, the man fled the scene, towards Kirkwood Avenue and has yet to be found. The man is described as white, in his 40s and around 5’8” with a beard and black slicked back hair, wearing a red and blue or white striped shirt with possibly overalls according to the police report. The IUPD encourages anyone with information concerning the incident to call 812-855-4111

Eight students at Indiana University are taking to the courtroom, to fight the current vaccine mandate put in place by IU administration. On Tuesday, attorneys representing the students produced their case in federal court in South Bend, saying the mandate violates students’ rights to bodily integrity. Seven of the eight students have applied for exemption to the vaccine. The judge said that the results will be announced soon, impacting the rest of the year for Indiana Students.

Monroe County Council

Executive Director of United Way of Monroe County Efrat Feferman gave an update on efforts to reduce homelessness to the Monroe County Council. At the July 13th meeting, Feferman gave a report on the Housing Insecurity Working Group . She talked about how the plan was shelved early in development in 2014, and that the working group identified the need for leadership on the project.

Councilor Marty Hawk asked for clarification on the different kinds of homeless resources. Feferman said that emergency shelters are important but highlighted the need for more transitional and housing-first resources.

Councilor Kate Wiltz questioned Feferman on her approach to get feedback from the unhoused population. Feferman replied that she worked with the Bloomington Homeless Coalition to make sure unhoused residents could have their feedback heard.

The next regular County Council meeting is scheduled for August 10th.

Bloomington Commission on Sustainability

The Bloomington Commission on Sustainability discussed racial equity. At the July 13th meeting, Commissioner Colin Murphy talked about the city of Oakland, California’s commitment to its racial equity impact assessment and implementation guide. He suggested inviting the consultants of the report to give a presentation on their report and how Bloomington could implement a similar plan.

Commissioner Jarrett Alexander asked if the presentation should be opened to a general audience. Commissioner Joseph Wynia said it should. He added that community members and city officials would benefit more from seeing the presentation.

Murphy suggested reaching out to community members to speak on equity in Bloomington as well. The Commission on Sustainability next meets on August 10th.
