Monroe County Community Justice Response

During the February 20th meeting of the Community Justice Response Committee, ACLU of Indiana Director Ken Falk urged the need for a new jail to the committee.

Falk explained a lawsuit the ACLU filed in 2008 against the county.

Monroe County Council Member Jennifer Crossley expressed frustration at the lack of effort done by leadership when the lawsuit was filed.

Falk noted that the lawsuit was considered a “private settlement agreement” meaning that it’s not subject to judicial enforcement.

County Commissioner Lee Jones asked what the worst-case scenario would be if a new lawsuit were to be filed. Falk responded.

During public comment, Care Not Cages Sydney Foreman urged the committee to limit the current jail population. She also asked the committee to carefully consider where they choose to construct the new jail.

Also during public comment, local resident Renee Miller advised the committee to listen to inmates when conducting the jail planning effort.

The CJRC will discuss more during their next meeting at 4:30 p.m. on March 6th.
