Also coming up in the next half hour, we have Strike Mic – Voices from the Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition in light of their recent strike against Indiana University.
But first, your daily headlines.

Bloomington Board of Public Works

On April 12th at the Bloomington Board of Public Works meeting Assistant City Attorney Daniel Dixon requested the board approve the partial demolition of the Johnson Creamery Smokestack.

Dixon informed the board that the City Council and the Historic Preservation Committee already approved the partial demolition, and explained the board’s involvement in the decision.

Board member Beth Hollingsworth asked when the demolition would begin.

Dixon said that AT&T still has equipment on the top of the smokestack, and they are waiting to hear back from them about when that will be removed before they can begin.

President of the Board Kyla Cox Deckard asked for clarification if the property owner would then be responsible for maintaining the height of the smokestack at 60 feet moving forward. Dixon said that they would.

Before calling the final vote Deckard thanked the City Staff, City Council, and Historic Preservation Commission for the diligent work they did.

The board voted unanimously to approve the Unsafe Order to Repair. The next board meeting will be held on May 10th.

Bloomington Redevelopment Commission

At the Bloomington Redevelopment Commission meeting on April 18th, Director of Housing and Neighborhood Development John Zody shared that commissioner member David Walter passed away.

Economic and Sustainable Development Director Alex Crowley noted that the drone show at the Mill was a successful event.

Neighborhood Services Program Manager Angela Van Rooy presented on the Neighborhood Improvement Grant Program. Van Rooy said that HAND received three applications for this funding round in 2022.

She shared the applications they recommended to receive the grant funding were for Arden Place Neighborhood Association, the Blue Ridge Neighborhood Association, and the Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association.

Commission member Randy Cassady asked if the outdoor fitness equipment the Arden Place Neighborhood Association wants to install would need to be maintained by the city parks department, and if the cost of that was calculated into the grant amounts. Van Rooy responded.

The commissioners voted unanimously to approve the distribution of the Neighborhood Improvement Grants. The next meeting will be held on May 2nd.
