At a time when educated Americans are demanding more work opportunities, international students are finding it harder to maintain their eligibility to remain in the country – even those whom are already employed. After obtaining his master’s degree from Indiana University, native Brit, and former WFHB volunteer Andrew Anderson was granted an Optional Practical Training visa, allowing him to work in the United States for one year. During that time Anderson found employment at NPR-affiliate Northeast Indiana Public Radio, but he is now being forced to leave the country.
For the first time in five years, the cap on HB1 work visas was met, and Anderson and all other international students whose renewal date fell after November 1st of twenty eleven were denied work visas. Anderson speaks about his experience, and what other international students at Indiana University can expect upon graduation, for this WFHB feature exclusive.
