A vehicle caused property damage to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, last night.

The Bloomington-based non-profit food pantry and community garden suffered damage to fruit trees and plantings, after a driver crashed through the garden on West Allen Street.

The Hub’s President and CEO Amanda Nickey says last night’s damage was extensive. She said it’s not the first time a driver has plowed through the food pantry’s garden on West Allen Street.

Over the past two years, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard has asked the city of Bloomington to do something about the high-speed traffic along the roadway. City of Bloomington Planning and Transportation Assistant Director Scott Robinson said the city is currently looking into ‘traffic mitigation,’ along West Allen.

Robinson said those measures could include decreasing speed limits, re-designing the stretch of road, narrowing shoulders and putting in cross walks. The city is currently looking into redesigning the eastern-most part of West Allen Street, where Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is, to make it more accessible for residents using public transit; A bus stop is located across the street from the food pantry.
