Some fifty-three twisters and tornadoes made their way across eight states overnight.

According the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 14 suspected tornadoes hit northern and eastern Indiana last night. The AP reports over a dozen people were injured and one death has been confirmed.

A tornado near Dayton, Ohio reportedly hit wind speeds up to 140 miles an hour, before passing through a bedroom community of Dayton.

Seventy-five homes were damaged in Pendleton, Indiana, north east of Indianapolis. Residents were warned to stay inside during the early hours this morning, as utilities and repair crews set about cleaning up downed power lines.

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill is warning residents, whose homes have been damaged by last night’s storms, should never pay money to contractors or repairmen up-front. Storm damage is often

followed by so-called storm chasers, who take money from owners of damaged property up-front, ostensibly to buy tools and materials, before leaving town.

NOAA reports outbreaks of 50 or more tornadoes have occurred at least 63 times in U.S. history. The organization also filed a separate report last week, which found this April to be the second hottest on record.
