Both Chris Mattingly and Dave Torneo are lovers of words — and the means to convey them to the public. They have founded several old school, letter block presses specializing in handmade volumes of poetry. Mattingly, who has published three books already, will release his fourth, The Catalyst, later this month. His work deals with family, love, violence, baseball, and the contrast between tough, gritty streets and the promise of a young child. Mattingly’s poetry is often inspired by and, just as often, becomes music. Torneo’s a writer with an encyclopedic knowledge of poets, both modern and classical.
