State Senate Stalls Hate Crime Bill

Proposed hate crime legislation has stalled in the Indiana state Senate.
SB418 was scheduled to be heard this morning in the Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law. The Associated Press reports the committee chair declined to take a vote on the bill because committee members couldn’t agree on its wording. Two other bills addressing hate crimes have been referred to the committee, but have not yet been scheduled for review.

Indiana is one of five states without any law against crimes motivated by bias. The other four states are Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina and Wyoming.
