On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled on Arizona’s controversial immigration statute – what’s sometimes referred to as the “show me your papers” law. The Justices said Arizona can require police to check the immigration status of any person they stop who they suspect is an undocumented immigrant. But, according to the ruling, some other parts of the law are unconstitutional. One of those sections allowed Arizona officers to arrest any individuals they believed were undocumented, even without a warrant. That provision is similar to an Indiana law, which allows officers to arrest any immigrants they believe have a federal deportation retainer or have been indicted for an aggravated felony in the past. Christie Popp, the Directing Attorney of Indiana Legal Services’ Immigrants’ and Language Rights Center, was in the studio yesterday, speaking with WFHB correspondent Louis Malone about the Supreme Court’s ruling and the effect on local Illegal Immigration Laws in Indiana, for today’s WFHB feature exclusive.
