RBB Schools Create Mental Health Support Team

Play

The Richland Bean Blossom School Board’s August meeting focused on a new Mental Health Support Team working across all the schools in the district. The program provides support for students dealing with depression, students affected by severe trauma, as well as others who may need support.

Dennis Faust, a guidance counselor for Edgewood High School talked about how the program will benefit not just students with mental health needs, but the student body as a whole.

Creation of the support team follows the suicide of an Edgewood High School student last year. Teen mental health remains an issue statewide. According to a report published by the Indiana Youth Institute this spring, one in five Indiana high school students seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. The report also indicated that Indiana has the highest percentage of both students seriously considering suicide and those with a suicide plan.
