Hearabouts: Celebrations, Growing Up, and Identity

Welcome to the 84th episode Hearabouts: Asian American Midwest Radio. Hearabouts is produced by Indiana University’s Asian Culture Center in collaboration with WFHB. We ask critical questions about identity, culture, community and shared assumptions. This episode is produced by Andrew Pace and Melanie Castillo-Cullather. Our sound engineer is Michael Sears.

Lunar New Year/ Spring Festival or Chinese New Year is a celebration that begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar in February.  Lunar New Year is celebrated amongst many regions and cultures around the world, each with its own traditions, practices and meaning surrounding the holiday. With Lunar New Year in mind we wanted to talk about celebrations and traditions. Though every Asian culture is unique with a variety of their own customs, their focus on spending time with family and loved ones is a commonality during such celebrations and all year round. In this episode, we take some time to reflect on celebrations and traditions growing up. Joined by two current IU students Win and Kristian, this episode features a discussion on family and community gatherings, the role that identity plays amidst these holidays and the longstanding traditions that shape who we are today.
