LWV-BMC Civic Conversations Welcomes Mary Morgan on Housing Issues in Bloomington and Monroe County

Play

This month, we welcomed Mary Morgan, director of housing security, with Heading Home, South Central Indiana. In the podcast, Mary and Jim discuss what housing looks like in Bloomington and Monroe County as it buttresses housing challenges in the US. Bloomington faces a shortage of single-family homes while also seeing a surge in rental properties being built. Nationwide, Morgan said, society housing trends are shifting to where the dream of owning a home may only be available to some. Rents have increased nationally, and communities are struggling with rising rents in Bloomington. Low-income housing, where federal housing choice vouchers are utilized too, is becoming a challenge to those recently homeless or coming out of jail because it is difficult to find landlords who will accept them. Morgan says one solution to this is developing relationships and working with area landlords to help fill that critical need.
