Civic Conversations – Redistricting

Play

Welcome to the August edition of Civic Conversations – a monthly podcast collaboration between the League of Women Voters of Bloomington and Monroe County and the WFHB Local News. Today’s topic is redistricting with guests Julia Vaughn of Common Cause and Sonia Leerkamp of Indiana Citizens Redistricting Commission.

Sonia Leerkamp serves on the board of the Brown County League of Women Voters and was the chair of the US Congressional district meetings for the Indiana Citizens Redistricting Committee.

Julia Vaughn joined Common Cause Indiana in 1995 and is responsible for policy development, lobbying, grassroots organizing and coalition building in the Hoosier State. She previously served as director of health policy for the Citizens Action Coalition of Indiana, and as director of Count Us IN, a project sponsored by the Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities to increase political participation by Hoosiers with disabilities. Julia has a degree in telecommunications from Indiana University.

In today’s conversation, the two discuss major takeaways from the recently released 2020 U.S. Census Data. They talk about how Hoosiers are moving from rural to suburban districts and what the census data means when it comes to redraw Indiana congressional districts. They also mention the Women for Change study on gerrymandering, which identified Indiana as among the most gerrymandered states in the country.

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, grassroots, citizen-led organization that has fought since 1920 to improve our government and engage all citizens in the decisions that impact their lives. Tune in next month to hear a discussion on public education on WFHB Community Radio.
