Civic Conversations – Former Congressman Lee Hamilton on Democracy

Play

Welcome to the November edition of Civic Conversations – a podcast collaboration between WFHB and the League of Women Voters of Bloomington and Monroe County.

Our guest today is former U.S. Congressman Lee Hamilton, who represented Indiana’s 9th district from 1965-1999. Hamilton speaks with host Jim Allison on the current state of our democracy.

On the topic of the erosion of democracy, Hamilton lends a relatively positive outlook on the future.

“I don’t agree with those people who are predicting that democracy will cease to exist,” says Hamilton. “The real challenge for all of us is to make sure that this system of government – representative democracy – works.”

Listen to the full episode to hear the longtime congressman weigh in on the current status of representative democracy during the latest edition of Civic Conversations.

Civic Conversations airs each month on the WFHB Local News at 5 p.m. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots, citizen-led organization that has fought since 1920 to improve our government and engage all citizens in the decisions that impact their lives.

Stay tuned next month to hear Indiana University Professor Scott Shackleford on the topic of Election Security.
