The League of Women Voters of Bloomington – Monroe County’s Ann Birch and George Hegeman talk about the fascinating history of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

The push for women’s suffrage dates back to the Civil War, but by August 18, 1920, 35 states had the 19th Amendment, eight states had rejected it, and five had not voted. Just one more was needed to ratify the amendment before the 1920 presidential election. The two main suffrage organizations, the National American Woman’s Suffrage Association and the National Woman’s Party, pinned all their hopes on Tennessee…
