Bring It On! – March 6, 2023: MCCSC Board’s Anti-Racism Policy

Play

Gloria Howell and Maqubé Reese are the hosts of today’s show. Throughout March, to commemorate Women’s History Month, each new show will be hosted by women. Gloria Howell is the director of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center.  Maqubé Reese is an academic advisor with the Groups Scholars Program and consults with incoming Groups Scholars on topics like the courses they should take their first semester, helping guide the first steps of their college experience.

Last Tuesday, the Monroe County Community School Board approved an anti-racism policy, after deciding not to vote on it during last month’s meeting. A student equity ambassador group created last fall helped draft the policy with school administrators. The district also received support from The Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center. Four of the student equity ambassadors were also S.W.A.G.G.E.R. (Students Who Act Generously, Grow, and Earn Respect) award recipients in the 9th-12th grade category. They are Sydney Crossley, Sabrah Wagner, Jael Davis, and Saphyne Franklin. They displayed exceptional leadership in social justice activism by advocating for an anti-racism policy to be included in the MCCSC student handbook.

District leaders made several changes to the policy since its first reading in December because of feedback from the community, including changing the policy’s name from a Racial Equity Policy to an Anti-Racism Policy. The revised policy includes a commitment that the district will introduce plans to track and enforce the policy’s objectives as soon as possible. Joining us this evening to unpack the new anti-racism policy are student equity ambassadors Sydney Crossley and Jael Davis. Also, joining us is Ruth Aydt, a concerned citizen who joined the Monroe County Branch of the NAACP in 2018, initially working on a report on Race and Criminal Justice in Monroe County.
