MLK Day events in our areaToday We Honor A Legacy

On today’s special extended edition of Bring It On! two guests are here on this holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.
In Part 1, hosts Clarence Boone and Liz Mitchell speak with Dr. Khalid el-Hakim, who is the MLK Day keynote speaker for the City of Bloomington. He is the founder and curator of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, a collection of over 7,000 original artifacts of Black memorabilia dating from the trans-Atlantic slave trade era to hip-hop culture, who will speak on “The Truth Hurts: Black History and Healing the Racial Divide”.

In Part 2, hosts Amrita Myers and Cornelius Wright speak with Robin Winston,  who is a Democrat strategist and an accomplished business leader. He made history when he became the first African American to chair a major political party in Indiana. Along with running the largest minority-owned public relations firm in Indiana, Robin has recently launched Progressive Thought Matters, a non-partisan, 501(c) 4 organization committed to educating the public, increasing public participation by previously under-represented groups, and promoting progressive public policy.

A Special Message from Robin Winston:
On this day when we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., please take a few moments to remember that elections do have consequences. Pictured below are photos of the late Congressman John Lewis being attacked by an Alabama State Trooper as he and other peaceful protesters attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in 1965. Please contrast that with the above photo of President Obama, Mrs. Obama, Congressman John Lewis, and others crossing that same Edmund Pettus Bridge in 2015.

For those of us who have served or will serve in government in the future, voting rights are crucial to the underpinning of our democracy. Dr. King was right when he said, “Give us the ballot…” Yes, give us the ballot and we will change America.

Let us all redouble our efforts to make a difference. We owe that to Dr. King and others who blazed the trails that we walk on today.
