Piedmont-Smith To Hold Constituent Meeting

Play

Bloomington City Council Representative Isabel Piedmont-Smith will hold her monthly constituent meeting this Saturday, September 27th. The meeting will feature a discussion of issues before the city council, including the city’s 2020 budget.

Piedmont-Smith will also present a draft resolution recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day in Bloomington. In a press release, Piedmont Smith points out that, though the name Indiana means land of the Indians, indiginous people were largely displaced by European settlers. Piedmont Smith says the resolution is a small step toward “recognizing the legacy of native peoples, their continued cultural impact, and the history of mistreatment in the state and region, that we are still working to overcome.”

The introduction of an Indiginous Peoples Day has grown as a counterpoint to Columbus Day, traditionally celebrated in October. But only a handful of states have replaced Columbus Day with Indiginous Peoples Day. The State of Indiana will celebrate Columbus Day on October 14th this year.

Piedmont-Smith’s meeting runs from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon in Room 155 of City Hall. All city residents are welcome to attend.
