Oliver North Ousted From NRA

Play

The National Rifle Association’s convention took place in Indianapolis, over the weekend. Notably absent was NRA spokesperson Oliver North.

North, a retired Marine Lieutenant Colonel at the center of the Iran-Contra scandal, announced Saturday he would not serve a second one-year term as NRA spokesman. North’s term ended today.

The Associated Press reports North’s announcement brings an end to a long-standing fight within the organization, between him and NRA Chief Executive Wayne LaPierre.

On Thursday, LaPierre sent a letter to NRA board members, stating that North was threatening to release ‘damaging information’ about the Chief Executive. North’s ouster this weekend appears to signal the NRA board is standing behind LaPierre.

North was convicted in 1989 of obstructing a congressional inquiry into the Iran-Contra affair. That inquiry found Reagan administration officials sold arms to Iran, in order to fund Nicaraguan anti-communist rebels.

North’s convictions were overturned in 1991.
