News Brief – October 20, 2020

1,551 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Indiana on Monday, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. That’s fifteen straight days of at least one thousand new positive cases in Indiana. There were 48 newly reported deaths. Locally, Monroe County saw 15 new confirmed cases yesterday. Lawrence County reported 7 new cases, while Brown County reported none.

Brown County High School issued an apology yesterday after discovering that a student on the basketball team was simply labeled as Black Guy in this year’s Brown County High School Yearbook. The Black student is the only player in the yearbook whose real name was not printed under the picture of the Brown County Eagles roster. The student was also the only Black student pictured. Brown County High School Principal Matthew Stark and Superintendent of Brown County Schools Doctor Laura Hammack sent a joint apology to families Monday evening. In the apology, they say that Brown County High School is “committed to ongoing investigation of the situation and will determine consequences for this action when the investigation is completed.” Doctor Hammack addressed the issue as part of a regular series of updates on Facebook live as well. In the video, Doctor Hammack says that Brown County High School has the option to collect and return the yearbooks for new copies. Neither statement mentions the student’s name.
