News Brief – October 13, 2020

1,569 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Indiana on Monday, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. There were 27 newly reported deaths. Locally, Monroe County saw 38 new confirmed cases yesterday. Keep in mind, Indiana University releases its weekly COVID test results every Wednesday. Lawrence County reported 9 new cases, while Brown County reported 1.

Ivy Tech Community College is one of 18 organizations selected by the US Department of Labor to help develop a new apprenticeship model. The US Department of Labor, or US DOL, has recognized Ivy Tech as a Standards Recognition Entity, or SRE, who will help oversee the creation of Industry-recognized Apprenticeship Programs. The program aims to expand apprenticeship opportunities to underutilized industries. Ivy Tech’s Executive Director of Apprenticeships Teresa Hess says the program will “greatly expand opportunities beyond the traditional programs, and provide additional flexibility and customization to increase apprenticeship programs across the state of Indiana” Ivy Tech will remain an SRE for five years.

A male Indiana University student was found dead in his apartment Monday morning. A maintenance worker entered the student’s apartment at around 11:30 am to check smoke detectors, and found the body laying o n the floor of the apartment. The worker alerted the IU Police Department when he could not wake the student. According to a statement given to the Indiana Daily Student, Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields said an autopsy has not yet been requested, because the death appears to be natural. The IUPD has not identified the student at this time.
