Members of the Bloomington chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America want to partner with the Monroe County Community School Corporation on gun safety education.

Courtney Dailey was one of seven Moms Demand Action members who promoted the organization’s Be SMART campaign to the MCCSC school board, last night. With three children in MCCSC schools, she cited 4.6 million children live in homes with guns stored unlocked and loaded. Moms Demand Action member Susan Ellenwood said the point of the Be SMART campaign is to educate community members on ways to keep kids safe from guns. The acronym SMART stands for Securing guns in homes and vehicles, Modeling responsible gun behavior, and Asking about the presence of guns in other homes. The program also raises awareness about teen suicide rates.

Moms Demand Action member Rachel Guglielmo said student vigilance is not enough; parents and other adults must share responsibility for their child’s safety. She acknowledged conversations on the issue can be difficult, and asked the school board to partner with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Local members hope Be SMART campaign materials can become part of comprehensive school safety policy. Gugleilmo said the organization hopes a partnership with MCCSC will help create conversations with other school administrators across the state.
