Interchange – Rebecca Manring: Understanding India

Host Dave Stewart welcomes Indiana University Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Acting Director of India Studies Rebecca Manring to Interchange. Beginning with a discussion of what the field of India Studies, and the department of Religious Studies is here at Indiana University, they segue into a discussion of a recent course taught by Professor Manring entitled “Mundir and Masjid at the Movies” (Temples and Mosques at the Movies). Bollywood is discussed, specifically the movie “Jodhaa Akbar”, and they spend some time discussing the movie “Earth”, as well as the book that it was based on, “Cracking India”. Professor Manring relates how a life-long love of languages led her to the study of Sanskrit, which led her in time to teaching here at Indiana University.
