Nearly two centuries after they were abolished in the U.S., debtors prisons are drawing national attention again after a breast cancer survivor in Illinois was arrested over a mistaken $280 medical bill. The Illinois legislature is considering a bill aimed at outlawing what happened to Lisa Lindsey, who had to pay $600 before being released from jail. But a similar law, one that is sometimes interpreted to allow police to arrest people who are taken to court by their creditors, is still on the books in Indiana.
