Indiana Center for Recovery Fails Fire Inspection

The Indiana Center for Recovery, a for-profit addiction treatment center that opened in Bloomington last June, failed a state fire inspection today. The City of Bloomington confirmed city Fire Inspector Tim Clapp accompanied the State Fire Marshal during an inspection of the Indiana Center for Recovery’s building, near the IU Health Bloomington Hospital, in downtown Bloomington.

The Indiana Center for Recovery has 30 days to bring their former apartment complex into compliance. City of Bloomington Communications Director Yael Ksander said the failed state fire inspection is due to a change in usage permit. The State Fire Inspection cited the Center for violating  state fire code 675IAC12-4-11b, which states, “No change in the character or use of any building or structure shall be permitted that shall cause the building or structure to be classified within a different occupancy group or within a different division of the same occupancy group.”

In a written statement to WFHB, Indiana Center for Recovery Executive Director Jackie Daniels wrote: Our goal has always been to create a safe and sober environment for the people participating in our program. We have 2 facilities: one, is our outpatient clinic where we offer services for people seeking addiction recovery. The 2nd is our apartment building. For the purposes of which this building is used, we are in full compliance. The facility has been up to standards for current use, and we are looking to upgrade for future potential use. Down the road, we do hope to provide residential treatment services that are so desperately needed in our community. At this time, our residents live in apartments and pay rent, just like many other residents in our community.
