The Herald-Times’ Managing Editor is stepping down.

In an email this morning, J.J. Perry, who took over the local daily in February, informed staff members he will leave. Perry took the helm of the newspaper, after the departure of long-time Editor Bob Zaltsberg, earlier this year. Perry is one of at least a dozen employees to leave since the beginning of 2019, when the paper was sold to GateHouse Media.

In his email this morning, Perry wrote to staff, “I want to let you know that I have given my notice here at the H-T. My last day will be April 30th.
These past three months have not been an easy time for the newsroom — it has been a lot of change. I am proud to have returned to Bloomington to help during that transition period.”

The Herald-Times was one of eight local newspapers across the state sold by South Bend parent company, Schurz Communications, in January. Schurz Communications bought The Herald-Times in 1966, when it was The Herald Telephone. On January 28th, Scott Schurz announced the sale of the newspaper to the nation’s largest local newspaper conglomerate, New York-based GateHouse Media. Schurz’s announcement came after the Hoosier Times newspapers, which includes The Herald-Times, as well as publications in Bedford, Spencer, and Martinsville, cut 17 jobs, in August.

Perry’s resignation this morning stated representatives with GateHouse Media have been “working on a transition plan for the past several weeks.”
