Grassroots Group Opposes Proposed Coal Plant

Play

After they found out that a coal-to-diesel plant is being planned to open in their town, residents of Dale, Indiana organized.

They came together and founded the grassroots Southwestern Indiana Citizens for Quality of Life, with the help of the environmental advocacy organization Valley watch in Evansville.

Mary Hess is the president of Southwestern Indiana Citizens for Quality of Life. She says residents are concerned about the environmental impact of the proposed coal to diesel plant on Spencer county, which is already one of the most polluted counties in the country.

There currently are no other coal-to-diesel plants in the country. And only a handful of others exist – in Russia and China.

Hess says organizers have been assured that the environmental impact of the proposed plant would be minimal, and the term ‘clean coal’ gets thrown around a lot.

We hear from Southwestern Indiana Citizens for Quality of Life President Mary Hess, in today’s Feature Report.
