Fewer Refugees Resettling Due to Trump Policies

Today is International Refugee Day.

Under United States law, a refugee is someone who is located outside of the United States and is of special humanitarian concern to the country. U.S. law states that refugees must demonstrate that they were persecuted or fear persecution due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.

Refugees wishing to settle in the US must not be firmly resettled in another country, and must be admissible to the United States. Further, U.S. Law stipulates that a refugee does not include anyone who ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in the persecution of any person on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.

In today’s feature report, Indianapolis-based Exodus Refugee Immigration Executive Director Cole Varga tells WFHB his organization can do little to resettle refugees, in the face of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
