Registered voters in Bloomington have the chance to vote today for the Mayoral seat and contested City Council positions in their residential districts.

Bloomington polls are scheduled to close at 6 p.m. Voter turnout in Bloomington has been low thus far, according to Monroe County Elections Supervisor, Karen Wheeler. She said voter turnout for the municipal primary stands at around 7.5 percent of registered voters, as of 3 p.m. Wheeler said she hopes that number will rise, to closer to 10 percent, which she said is closer to the average turnout for municipal elections.

First-term Incumbent Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton is likely to win in today’s primary elections. Despite appearing on the ballot, fellow Democratic mayoral challenger Amanda Barge announced earlier last month, she’ll concede if she wins. Barge would have until mid-July to officially concede.

Along with the Mayoral seat, local residents had a chance to vote for city council representatives. Nineteen city council candidates appeared on ballots, today. Only District 3 (D) Ron Smith, incumbent District 6 (D) Steve Volan, and District 2 (R) Andrew Guenther ran unopposed, in their respective primaries. Wheeler said primary results have not yet been tallied, but final counts are expected later tonight, after polls close at 6 p.m.

Today’s primaries will determine which candidates will run for council seats this November.
