The Indiana Department of Natural Resources confirmed Monday a black bear was involved in a automobile accident in Southern Indiana, over the weekend.
A driver reported hitting a bear on Interstate 64 near New Albany, Sunday night. DNR reports the injured animal wandered off into the woods nearby after the incident. The driver was uninjured. Black bears are very rare in Indiana.
In 2016, a black bear was confirmed sighted in southern Indiana in Harrison, Washington and Clark counties. Prior to 2015, when a black bear was spotted entering into the state from Michigan, the last sighting of a native black bear in Indiana was in the 1870’s.
