Climate Strike

Play

This Friday, September 20th, students around the country will be on strike, demanding action on climate change from their local elected officials. Bloomington is one of many cities across the country where students will take to the streets.

Students will begin walking out of classrooms at 11:30 a.m. and meet at Indiana University’s Dunn Meadow. From there, the demonstrators will march to People’s Park, where they will be joined by striking non-student community members at 2 p.m. The combined group will march from People’s Park to Bloomington’s City Hall, where they will present their demands to Mayor John Hamilton at 3 p.m. These demands include committing to and developing a concrete plan to get Bloomington to Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, achieving 60 percent tree coverage, and expanding funding for sustainable housing, transit and the local food economy.

The local event is part of a global climate strike, and is being organized by the local chapters of Sunrise Movement and Extinction Rebellion.
