Welcome to the July edition of Civic Conversations – a monthly podcast collaboration between WFHB and the League of Women Voters of Bloomington and Monroe County.
Our guest for this month is Jennifer Haan, lead volunteer for the Indiana Chapter of Moms Demand Action. In the podcast, we cover what Moms Demand does, permit-less carry, red-flag laws and reasonable gun safety measures.
“Moms Demand Action started right here in the Hoosier state,” says Haan.
She explains that the advocacy group started as a reaction to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 28 people. Founder Shannon Watts, who lived in Zionsville, Indiana, started a Facebook group to unite women against gun violence.
“Since then, Moms Demand Action has grown to 6 million volunteers nationwide,” she says. “We have chapters in all 50 states.”
Haan also discusses advocacy. When asked what Moms Demand Action advocates for – Haan responds, “how much time do we have?”
“Part of our work in every state is make sure we elect gun-sense candidates up and down the ballot,” she says. “We also advocate for solutions to gun violence that are evidence-based and fact-driven.”
Furthermore, the organization acts as an educational programmer with an emphasis on non-partisan or non-political methods.
