City of Bloomington Utilities plans to demolish its old Griffy Lake water plant. Capital Projects Manager Mike Hicks told the Utilities Service Board last night a recent investigation revealed asbestos at the plant.

The Griffy water treatment plant was built in 1925 but went out of use in 1996.

Veit Environmental conducted the asbestos investigation. Hicks assured Commission member Jason Banach that the investigation was thorough and all the asbestos will be removed.

The Utilities Service Board approved contracting with SSI Services for the asbestos removal and disposal.

In his report to the Board, Utilities Director Vic Kelson reported the collapse of two underground culverts.

Kelson said utilities engineers are working on a fix for another culvert collapse, this one under a parking lot at Wiley and Walnut Streets. The next utilities service board meeting takes place on July 9th.
