City Planning Director: Trash Station is Legal

Play

Over the past week, several Bloomington city officials have come out against plans for a new trash transfer station in a residential neighborhood on the west side of town. For several weeks residents who live near the site on West Vernal Pike have publicly criticized plans for the station, which would be able to accept and haul off a hundred tons of trash each day. The station would be located at JB Salvage, which already runs a scrap yard there. So far, the city’s position has been that it has no power to stop the project, even though the mayor and some city council members oppose it. That’s because, according to City Planning Director Tom Micuda, the project is allowed by the city’s zoning. For today’s WFHB feature exclusive, Micuda talked with Assistant News Director Joe Crawford about the trash transfer station and his department’s response to neighbors’ complaints.
