The city of Bloomington is reviewing its harassment policies and guidelines.
In a new ordinance, to be voted on by the Common Council, the harassment guidelines will extend to contracted employees and businesses. The ordinance, which is sponsored by At-Large Council Member Susan Sandberg, is expected to be brought up during the council’s next regularly scheduled meeting, this Wednesday.
City of Bloomington Communication’s Director Yael Ksander said the city was prompted to revisit its harassment policies, after Monroe County Commissioner Amanda Barge stepped down this Spring, due to allegations made by a former county contractor.
Ksander said the ordinance would extend protections against discrimination or harassment to anyone doing work for the city, even on a volunteer basis. The ordinance would also mandate any company carrying out a contract with the city to have in place a harassment policy, which could then be reviewed by city administrators.
