The City of Bloomington’s Human Rights Commission have selected Bloomington PRIDE to receive the Human Rights Award this year.

The award is given to organizations or individuals who demonstrate a commitment to equal access in housing, employment, education, and community life for people with disabilities. Nominations also recognize those who have worked in advocating for civility and tolerance.

From it’s website, Bloomington Pride is a non-profit, LGBTQ+ advocacy and programming organization.

Human Rights Commission Director and City of Bloomington Attorney, Barbara McKinney, says although the commission decided to confer the award to Bloomington Pride, they will have to wait until city council can reconvene to bestow it.

McKinney says the Human Rights Commission is currently looking to fill a public vacancy.

Bloomington Pride Chair Janae Cummings says she’s thankful that the non-profit’s work is being recognized in the community.

Cummings says the annual Bloomington Pride Film Festival, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, is an opportunity for members of the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate their identities and come together.

The Bloomington Pride Film Festival begins on Thursday and lasts until Saturday.
