On this episode of BloomingOUT, we have Caylee Parrish, a local 22-year old who is here to talk about personal experiences of gender identity, sexuality, and what it is like being someone who is gender non-conforming.

Melanie also discuses some recent pending legislation regarding LGBT+ rights:

SENATE BILL No. 12
Synopsis: Bias motivated crimes. Makes it an aggravating circumstance (for purposes of imposing a criminal sentence) that a crime was committed with the intent to harm or intimidate an individual or a group of individuals because of certain perceived or actual characteristics of the individual or group of individuals. Requires law enforcement agencies to report bias motivated crimes to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Notes: In Committee, will probably die there.

SENATE BILL No. 75

SENATE BILL No. 284
Synopsis: Prohibition of conversion therapy. Prohibits a mental health provider from engaging in conversion therapy with a patient less than 18 years of age, and subjects a mental health provider who violates the prohibition to disciplinary action.
Notes; Sitting in Judiciary Committee: fate unknown.

There’s a new Chapter of PFLAG forming in Bloomington. PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays – and the rest of the rainbow, too) is an organization for the families and allies of LGBTIQ+ people. They exist to provide support, information, tools, and resources.
