You get a fake message, on email, on your phone, as a pop-up window in your browser, that looks like it comes from a legitimate source and wants you to respond. If you fall for it, you end up giving your identity away to a crook, or sending money to a swindler or an extortionist, or getting some nasty program installed on your digital device that spies on you or shuts you down completely.
