Area Shelters Brace for ‘Chilling Effect’ on Area Homeless

Recent drops in temperatures can exacerbate the problems faced by those experiencing homelessness.

The National Health Care for the Homeless Council says hypothermia can set in at anywhere from 32 – 50 degrees Fahrenheit. When it gets cold, body heat escapes through the skin and internal temperatures can drop to dangerous lows.

In Bloomington, The Shalom Community Center provides shelter, hot meals, and winter clothing for the area’s homeless. Executive Director Forrest Gilmore said as the cold approaches, need grows.
