It was a lucky day for both McKenzie Goodrich and Barney the dog when they met years ago at the Bloomington Animal Shelter. The match was a good one. And one that would blossom into something good for the community as well. They have been volunteering together as a V.I.PAWS pet partner team through the Monroe County Humane Association program for four years now. McKenzie acts as Barney’s “voice” and his facilitator to connect to people in the community who can benefit from his skills of being “a big love”. They participate in the Animal Reading Friends (ARF) program at the library, encouraging early literacy, visits to Jill’s House to engage with people with memory loss, and are regulars at the IU-sponsored de-stress fest at the Wells Library during finals.
