Joan Hawkins had done a lot of creative writing as a younger person, but she mostly abandoned that pursuit as she advanced in her academic career and other priorities took over. Recently she began to feel the pull to return to memoir writing. She attended an open mike night sponsored by the Writers Guild and read one of her memoir pieces and received such encouraging feedback that it spurred her to deepen her involvement with the Guild and continue her pursuit of memoir writing. Joan found the Guild to be a warm and welcoming group that supported her endeavors and connected her to a community of writers. Slowly her involvement started to include administrative support of the group as a volunteer as well. The importance of the representation of writing in the spectrum of arts in our community remains a priority for Joan. The Writers Guild began in 2010 to sponsor local writer’s work and give an opportunity to meet and connect. All are welcome, writers or not, to join any of these events as participants or volunteers in supporting the mission of the Writers Guild.
