46,000 Lose Power Across South Central Indiana

Play

Residences and businesses across South Central Indiana lost power this afternoon.

Duke Energy reported an estimated 46,000 customers affected by the outage- 15,000 of those in Monroe County, and another 6,000 across Lawrence and Bartholomew counties. Many traffic lights in downtown Bloomington are offline and downtown businesses were without power for four hours, including Bloomington City Hall.

Power was out at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, which was running off of backup generators. The outage is believed to have been caused by severe storms following in the wake of ‘sub-tropical depression’ Alberto.
