A Mumps outbreak at Indiana University has infected 29 people at the state school, in Bloomington.

Mumps is a non-fatal viral infection of the salivary glands in humans and is often vaccinated for in infants, under the Mumps Measles and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. IU Director of Media Relations Chuck Carney says as of this morning, 29 people were found to be infected with the virus. Carney says the virus is still spreading, although IU requires all students to receive immunizations before enrolling in their second semester.

Carney says the university is encouraging faculty, staff and students to get the MMR Immunizations as soon as possible, and to take basic precautions, like not sharing drinks or utensils.
County Health Administrator Penny Caudill says the Measles mumps and Rubella vaccine is still available through the county’s public health clinic. Caudill talked about vaccines and tiders with Monroe County Commissioner Julie Thomas, in this morning’s county commissioners meeting.

The Monroe County Public Health Clinic is located at 333 East Miller Drive. For more information, you can call the clinic at 812-353-3244. Caudill said Monroe County has some of the best vaccination rates in the state.
