Lightning Strike at WFHB Causes Service Interruptions

UPDATE 9/26/24 9:00AM: We have managed to hook up one phone for the entire station. A new phone system is in the process of being purchased. Our webstream is officially down until further notice. We have been unable to troubleshoot the difficulty in the stereo imbalance and lack of quality in the signal.

At approximately 9:30pm on Friday, September 20, lightning struck the facilities at WFHB Studios on 4th St in downtown Bloomington. We were able to get back on the air the following morning, with all four frequencies broadcasting, but the surge damaged our main mixing board and critical production computers, including the computer that puts out our web stream. All of which were protected on UPS systems. It also took out our telephone systems, including all of our modified phones which allow us to record phone interviews. We are unable to make or receive calls at the station. Our internet infrastructure also took a hit but is finally back online as of this writing 4:30pm Monday. Our webstream is also back online, but we are troubleshooting an imbalance in the stereo mix.

There’s never a good time to be struck by lightning, but we were hit during one of our peak on-air fundraising efforts. There will be many costly pieces of equipment to replace. Insurance will likely cover the damages, but we will need spend money before recovering it. Money raised for day-to-day operations will have to be spend on recovery. Please consider a donation if you have not donated yet. Every dollar helps.
