The event will begin with music from singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer and her husband Robert Meitus. Dr. Helfand chaired a United Nations working group which led to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. He has worked for nuclear disarmament through the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which received the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize, and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which received the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. Helfand is very active in Back from the Brink, a U.S.-based grassroots coalition working to rid the world of nuclear weapons.
Dr. Helfand’s visit to Bloomington is sponsored by the Bloomington Peace Action Coalition, the Just Peace Task Force of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington, Bloomington Friends Meeting (Quakers), and numerous individuals and couples. Morgenstern Books will feature a display of relevant resources which will continue be available for some days after Dr. Helfand’s talk.
