Melt the I.C.E. Resistant Hats Gathering

Melt the ICE Hat is a modern knit pattern recreating the Norwegian resistance hat worn during World War II. In the 1940s, Norwegians secretly made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a silent protest of Nazi occupation. The Nazis banned the hats in February 1942, making it illegal to wear, and punishable by law to make or distribute them.
A large segment of Minnesota residents come from Norwegian heritage and therefore it was decided as purveyors of the traditional craft, to resurrect this symbolic act of resistance.

The Melt the ICE Hat uses approximately 200 yards of red yarn (fingering, DK, or Worsted weight) and is designed for circular needles in US sizes 4–8 mm. Finished size: 22” circumference. Juniper Art Gallery has purchased the pattern for you to use.
The red tassel hat remains a powerful emblem of quiet resistance, rooted in Norway’s wartime defiance. Please bring your red yarn, scissors, tapestry needles and your enthusiasm!
