Discardia Mending Day

Remember when we used to fix stuff instead of just throwing it away? Discardia is a project of Bloomington’s Center for Sustainable Living. The mission is to give new life to reclaimed materials that would otherwise be discarded. Reuse, recycle, refashion. On the second Saturday of every month, Discardia hosts a Mending Day at the library focused on clothing and textiles. Discardia volunteers use their own sewing machines and supplies to help you restore that old baby blanket or put a new button on your favorite shirt. In the process of fixing things, other cool things happen too. Volunteer Vic Streiff says Mending Day teaches lost skills and builds community. IU professor Mary Embry says it encourages a sustainability mindset lacking in modern fashion. Mending Day patron Jonathan was just happy to have his late mother’s jacket back.
