New Americas Cinema Series: Daughters of the Dust – A Q&A with filmmaker Julie Dash will follow the screening @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Sep 25 @ 7:00 pm

At the dawn of the 20th century, a multi-generational family in the Gullah community on the Sea Islands off of South Carolina—former West African slaves who adopted many of their ancestors’ Yoruba traditions—struggle to maintain their cultural heritage and folklore while contemplating a migration to the mainland, even further from their roots. The first wide release by a Black woman filmmaker, Daughters of the Dust was met with wild critical acclaim and rapturous audience response when it initially opened in 1991. Casting a long legacy, the film still resonates today, most recently as a major influence on Beyonce’s video album Lemonade and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Proper color grading of the new 2K restoration was overseen by cinematographer Arthur Jafa, ensuring audiences will finally see the film exactly as Dash intended. Restored from the original internegative at Modern Videofilm with assistance from the UCLA Film & Television Archive. [112 min; drama, romance; French and English]

Three Cheers for 100 Years Film Series: SOME LIKE IT HOT @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Sep 27 @ 4:00 pm

After accidentally becoming witnesses to a Chicago gang shooting, jazz musicians Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) have no money and nowhere to hide, forcing them to take a gig with an all-female band at a Florida resort. Armed with bad wigs and even worse falsettos, Joe and Jerry transform into Josephine and Daphne, a cover that quickly tests their mettle as Joe pursues the band’s bombshell of a singer (a radiant Marilyn Monroe), a lecherous millionaire playboy pursues Jerry, and the mob boss who started it all pursues both men.

This screening will include a recorded introduction by director Brittany Shyne.
With remarkable intimacy, Seeds documents the everyday lives of Black generational farmers—cotton harvesting, chasing cows, dealing with broken machinery and financial precarities. Director Brittany Shyne’s camera relishes simple moments—conversations through car windows, candy from grandma’s purse as it captures moments of warmth, joy and fulfillment—turning them into striking vignettes that honor the families’ connection to the land and each other. But the sobering reality underscores the urgency of their story: Black farmers owned 16 million acres of land in1910 but today, that number has dwindled to a fraction. The farmers in the community struggle to access funding that white farmers nearby seem to secure with ease. Through these intergenerational stories, we see the cycles of inequity and embedded racism that persist to this present day, and the signs of hope and renewal with younger generations of farmers. Seeds emphasizes how human beings are innately tied to our foundational roots, roots which carry our ancestral memories—somber, bitter, and sweet.
